What drives the SS-31 price
SS-31 is a four-residue peptide, D-Arg-Dmt-Lys-Phe-NH2, formula C32H49N9O5, and a good example of how a short chain can still carry a real price. The second position is 2′,6′-dimethyltyrosine (Dmt), a non-standard aromatic residue whose protected building block costs far more than ordinary tyrosine, and the first is the D-isomer of arginine. With only four couplings the yield is high and purification is quick, so the specialist inputs dominate the cost. Suppliers split between 10 mg and 50 mg vials, and the 50 mg band is roughly half the per-mg price of the 10 mg band in this edition. That gap is wider than for most compounds, because a large share of a small vial's price is the fixed cost of filling and releasing it. For larger research quantities, the 50 mg vial is the value point, and the 10 mg band median is the benchmark for a single small vial of SS-31.
